Staying Positive: Reasons for Hope After the Miami Dolphins’ Tough Week 1 Loss
It wasn't the start Dolphins fans hoped for, but here are two reasons to keep the faith after a tough Week 1 loss
The Miami Dolphins went into their 2026 season opener at a huge disadvantage.
As the youngest team in the league with a record $183million in dead cap and, as a result, the lowest payroll in the NFL, they are going to be underdogs for most, if not all, their games this year.
If Dolphins fans weren’t aware of that fact, they probably got the message on Sunday with a rough 27-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. If we’re honest, Miami never really looked like winning.
This summer Dolphins Head Coach Jeff Hafley said that this season “success won’t be defined by winning” and would instead be determined by development and improvement from his young team.
And, boy howdy, is there room to improve.
However, despite the more vocal aspects of the Dolphins online fanbase, there are things to be optimistic about after the season opener.
Firstly, Caleb Douglas had a fantastic debut.
He currently leads all rookie wrs in receptions, yards and YAC! His 94 receiving yards tied Tyreek Hill’s record for a Dolphins debut. It’s early days but it seems like Miami may have their long term answer at wide receiver in the man Texas Tech fans dubbed “Payday”.
Next up, we have another Red Raider, Jacob Rodriguez. J-Rod recorded 14 tackles on Sunday, the most by a Dolphins rookie since Hall of Fame Linebacker, Zach Thomas, who had 16 in 1996.
Again, it’s early days, but anytime your production is comparable to a legend like Zach Thomas, it’s a very good sign.
As I said to begin this article, this is a very young team. Miami has more rookies than anyother team and is starting a significant portion of them.
It’s going to take time for them to develop and grow, both in skill and confidence. In 2019, the opening game was a 59-10 home loss to Baltimore.
That year, Miami finished 5-11 including going 5-4 in their final 9 games. I believe that this team has more talent than that one. It’s just going to take time for them to get there.
Finally, It’s also worth noting that, while the defence struggled, there was something to smile about.
Rookie Michael Taaffe recorded his first career interception before Dante Trader Jr added a second.
That might not seem like much but it does mean Miami has 2 more interceptions after 1 game than the Jets have had in their last 18.
A reminder that, no matter how dark things get, we will, someway or another, always have gang green to laugh at.
